The first example of monolayer-protected metal nanoparticles able to deliver nitric oxide upon visible light stimuli is reported. These hybrid nanosystems exhibit a combination of indispensable properties for biological applications, such as ultrasmall sizes (ca. 1 nm), water solubility and thermal stability under physiological conditions, photoactivation with low-energy light, and photogeneration of nontoxic intermediates. Abstract
