Tony Blair's speeches on Iraq make frequent reference to the values associated with western 'democracies'. Like its sister phrase, 'war on terror', it is suggested that the notion of a 'crusade for democracy' could represent a convenient rhetorical token by means of which consensus for Britain's military engagement in Iraq could be created. A corpus of Blair's speeches from the period is analysed, to explore the degree to which the phrase might indeed be used in this sense.

Abstract
Tony Blair's speeches on Iraq make frequent reference to the values associated with western 'democracies'. Like its sister phrase, 'war on terror', it is suggested that the notion of a 'crusade for democracy' could represent a convenient rhetorical token by means of which consensus for Britain's military engagement in Iraq could be created. A corpus of Blair's speeches from the period is analysed, to explore the degree to which the phrase might indeed be used in this sense.File in questo prodotto:
