The study of defects induced in polymers by energetic ions is complicated by the molecular size of the target, that is larger than that of the dimension of the ion track. In polymer targets the macromolecule acts as a bridge that links tracks that would be too far apart to interact in small molecular systems. In this paper we present an experimental method to locate the critical fluence for transition from isolated to overlap track regime via the study of the Molecular Weight Distribution (MWD). In particular, we present here two prototype cases where we show how to extract the MWD of the ion tracks in the single and in the overlap track regime.

Abstract

The study of defects induced in polymers by energetic ions is complicated by the molecular size of the target, that is larger than that of the dimension of the ion track. In polymer targets the macromolecule acts as a bridge that links tracks that would be too far apart to interact in small molecular systems. In this paper we present an experimental method to locate the critical fluence for transition from isolated to overlap track regime via the study of the Molecular Weight Distribution (MWD). In particular, we present here two prototype cases where we show how to extract the MWD of the ion tracks in the single and in the overlap track regime.
