By analyzing the values of bone mineral density measured as T-score value we evaluate the favorable effect of Tibolone in the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis and in the variation of bone density in osteoporotic women. We have enrolled 42 post-menopausal women with a mean age of 51.7 years (range 43-58 years) and mean age at menopause of 49.8 years, and we have proposed a hormone replacement therapy with Tibolone (Livial ®) 2.5 mg / day. The assessment of bone mineral density was performed at recruitment and after 12 months by DEXA evaluation of BMD and T-score values of the examined sites (lumbar spine and proximal femur) and classified according to WHO criteria. After 12 months a significant reduction in the lumbar spine (P<0.001) and femoral (P<0.05) values of T-score has been shown. In the spine the mean T-score ranged from -1.7 to -1.4 (+17.6%), femoral T-score ranged from -0.8 to -0.7 (+12, 5%). At the lumbar spine the mean values of osteoporotic women ranged from -2.6 to -2.2 with an average increase of 11.5%. This study has shown that Tibolone can prevent bone loss and increase bone mineral density at lumbar spine and proximal femur in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.
