ABSTRACT. Knowing and translating the terminology and phraseology of the legal language into Spanish and Italian represents a great challenge for the translator, who cannot fulfil the task by exclusively consulting the lexicon in the available Spanish-Italian / Italian-Spanish bilingual legal lexicographical repertoires. Starting from this assumption, the present article focuses on the knowledge of the Spanish-Italian terminology and phraseology currently in force in a body of civil sentences in both languages, paying particular attention to the discursive differences as well as to the syntactic and functional conventions. We examined a body of civil sentences decided on appeal between 2016 and 2018, which were ruled by the Spanish Supreme Court (Tribunal Supremo) and the Italian Supreme Court of Appeals (Corte Suprema di Cassazione) on various issues.
