: In Sartre’s first philosophical reflection, the search for a link between phenomenology, existentialism and Marxism identifies in colonial space a potential space of synthesis. These are the first steps of Sartre as «African» philosopher (Mudimbe). In Orphée noir (1947) the négritude is read in the light of relationship between the particular and the universal, bringing to light both the condition of the possibility of the participation of the particular in the universal – embodied in the aesthetic reconstitution of alienated colonial subjectivity – and the prospective revolutionary alliance between the European proletariat and colonized blacks. In this framework the Orphée should be placed in the context of the African intellectual presence in Paris between the Two Wars, the Présence Africaine group gathered around Alioune Diop and the theoretical and political debate on race, racism and revolution as a ‘humanist’ event.
