Beta-catenin is a major protein in the Wntsignalling pathway. Although it has been studiedin various types of carcinoma, little isknown about its expression in mesenchymaltumours. In this study 41 specimens of a varietyof mesenchymal childhood tumours werecompared to 24 samples of the correspondingadult tumours to assess the diagnostic value ofnuclear β-catenin expression using tissuemicroarray-based immunohistochemistry.Similar to adult sarcoma and fibromatosis, β-catenin was not expressed in the majority ofchildhood sarcomas, and its nuclear translocationwas detected in paediatric fibromatosis;non-negligible levels of nuclear staining inother tumour types demonstrate Wnt pathwayactivation in mesenchymal neoplasms of childhoodand adolescence.
