The essay aims to underline the importance of the relations between East and West, fundamental for the understanding of the history of Christianity in the early centuries but also to capture important aspects of contemporary history. And it highlights how the historical reconstruction of these centuries, i.e. of late antiquity Christianity, must make use of the tools and methods of literature, as well as history, because of the strong cultural dimension of the Christian religion and the type of sources.

Il saggio intende sottolineare l’importanza delle relazioni fra Oriente e Occidente, fondamentali per la comprensione della storia del Cristianesimo dei primi secoli ma anche per cogliere aspetti centrali della storia contemporanea. E mette in luce come la ricostruzione storica di questi secoli, cioè del cristianesimo della tarda antichità, debba avvalersi di strumenti e metodi della letteratura, oltre che della storia, in ragione della dimensione culturale della religione cristiana e della tipologia delle fonti.
