In this article we intend to present a reflection on the forms of the "novel/romance" in pre-modern Arabic Literature. By adopting a perspective of "mode" and not of "genre", and identified some "constants" which give a "romance" character to texts ascribable to different literary genres, the analysis is conducted on Kitab al-i'tibar, on Maqamat and on a story of the Thousand and One Nights.
