Abstract
The extraction of sulfur in Sicily dates from remote times. The mining industry has enjoyed a natural monopoly from the last decades of the nineteenth century until the first thirty years of the twentieth century. After that, the crisis was irreversible, despite public attempts to keep the industry active. The income for landowners and capitalists was enormous, while the socio-economic conditions of the miners were tragic, especially for the carusi, minors forced to work in mines where they often died from accidents. In the Sicilian territory remains a great industrial and cultural heritage that could be a resource for the tourist development of some inland areas, especially the plateau extended between the provinces of Agrigento, Caltanissetta, and Enna. The regional plans, however, remain only intents, without funding or functioning project ideas. Yet, the opportunity should not be further missed.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
