From 1997 to 2003, a population of 1800 individuals, potentially exposed to biological risk, was investigated to define the immunological status for Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the degree of awareness of HBV vaccination. The results showed that 25 workers were positive to HBsAg, that is 1.3% (CI 1.01-1.40) of the total population examined; 6.4% (CI 4.2-8.6) showed positive markers of previous infection. Only 25% of the entire study population in the year 1997 and 44.4% in the year 2003 were vaccinated. The prevalence of vaccination was found among professional nurses and auxiliaries. No evidence of new infected cases was observed during the period of the study.
