Bacterial adherence to host tissue is a prmary step in the colonization and infection of mucosal surfaces. It is well Known that antibiotics are able to inhibit mechanisms of bacterial adhesion by interfering with the glycocalyx, a structure involved in this process. In fact, trh therapeutic effects of antibiotics molecules can also be explained by the indirect activity of cefotetan, a new cephamycin, a Psedomonas aeruginosa glycocalix in an in vitro and in vivo model. For this purpose the percentage of mortality was evaluated in two groups of mice: one group was inoculated with untrated P.aeruginosa able to produce glycocalyx, the others one with bacteria and cefotetan at a concentration similar to that observed at one-fourth the sublethal concentrations. Results confirmed that in the group of mice treated withcefotetan, bacterial adhesion was inhibited by interfering with glycocalyx synthesis.
