The essay is about the Italian Greats of Spain. A vast topic, which does not fall within the usual formal categorizations when it comes to understand its ties with political, social and cultural history. Keeping on the background the complex issue of ceremonial history, the essay examines the role of Grandato in determining the balances of Italian aristocracy between XVI and XVIII centuries, up to becoming coveted goal of those families which, before others, aimed to access the closed circle of transnational elites that pulled the strings of the first global monarchy. A privileged key to understand the harsh competition among Italian nobles dealing with fame, allegiances, nations and empire.
