Abstract

Requalification of the Agro-Urban Coastal Landscape: City of Catania Case Study. Actuating Requalification processes in light 01 the need to re-establish the balance between human activity and nature has been identified as the priority objective oftbe operative strategies oftbe European Union. In sensitive contexts lzke the coastline, local policy has been urged to adopt strategies and tnteruention methodologies aimed at integrating sustainable development into environmental and landscape recovery. Over time, the rapport between Catania and the sea has seen a progressive change in equilibnum between the human and natural components due to an urbanisation which has paid little heed to the environment instead 01 respecting the connection between the urban fabric, agriculturalfabric and the sea. Because oftbe complexity ofsucb a re-composition an analytical base is needed which takes into account al! the angles - an interdisciplinary approach which can deal with the contnbutions ofmultiple sectors. As a consequence, agriculture should no longer be considered in terms 01 quality and competitivity but in terms 01 an activity ubicb is interconnected to and safeguards the environment and landscape, beingfundamental to the overlap between human activity and the environment and able to define and cbaractense the coastal landscape. Tbis study focused one 01 the most sensitive areas Catania coastline icbid: lies from the South 01 the city to the estuary 01 the River Simeto which is strongly agricultural; an analytical method was deueloped to classify 'location condùion' highlighting specificity in order to propose guidelines aimed at conseroing environmental quality, ensuring interconnectivity between al! terrùorial components and developing an economy based on sustainable tourism.
