Pasolini’s cinematic universe offers a gallery of characters who, thanks to precise casting choices, embody profiles of great expressiveness and pathos, in a perfect balance between the various characters. This complexity is due to scrupulous attention to the rules of acting, upon which Pasolini apparently does not build a specific ‘theory’ in spite of continuously intervening on issues relating to his relationship with the actors. In what may be called an initial critical-methodological approach, the essay tries to reconstruct Pasolini’s approach to directing the actors, his attention to bodies and faces, and the importance of the truth of posture, which does not exclude artifice but points to the perfect combination of character and the act of performance.
