On December 12, 1982, thirty thousand women surrounded the NATO base in Greenham Common, weaving a spider’s web with threads of wool and decorated with everyday objects. On the same day, the Coordination of Catania, the pacifists of the mixed camp of Comiso and some local women blocked the entrance to Magliocco airport, in turn weaving colored woolen threads. The connection with British lesbian feminists led to the birth of the peace camp “La Ragnatela”, built right in front of the military base, on a piece of land purchased with a symbolic share of one thousand lire per square meter. Here women of different nationalities together with Italians, coming from different geographical realities, laid the bases for a unique experience. The essay aims to reconstruct that experience, the exchange of models, practices and reflections among pacifists in a transnational perspective.
