The concept was first developed in the works of G. Simmel. According to Simmel, social relations are always characterized by ambivalent features, and social phenomena are in continuous evolution through a variety of conflicting forces addressed to social change. The essay aims to examine the different interpretative and applicative nu-ances of the concept of ambivalence in the works of Simmel, exploring possible connections with Weber’s theory concerning the topics of multi-dimensionality and conflict, and the implementation of ambivalence as heuristic key in the study of complexities in contemporary times.
