The subject of the article is the analysis of the human story of the great contestable of Naples Federico Colonna, related to his Italian phase, prior his nomination as viceroy of Valencia and his participation to the Catalan movements of 1640. He belonged to one of the most important families of the Italian aristocracy, but his history is still not well known. His life took place between Italy and Spain, with a background of complex events, marked by hostility and disagreements. As was the case of the opposition to Luigi Guglielmo Moncada, who was a member of the Sicilian aristocracy. The story of the Colonna offers the opportunity to reflect on involvement practices and political bargaining, exclusion, and the great role played by family alliances and political associations, in the context of loyalty to the monarchy.
