If we study Elsa de’ Giorgi’s production by adopting the critical and theoretical perspective of ‘divagraphy’ (Rizzarelli, 2017), it is impossible not to refer to an horizon that holds together literature, cinema and theater, the poles along which the activity of the actress-writer flows. The contaminations between the literary and visual arts are amplified if we also consider other media, such as the figurative one. If we observe, in fact, some segments of de’ Giorgi’s corpus, the dialogue between literature and visual arts lends itself to offering further levels of analysis of the author’s image. This contribution focuses on some of the images reproduced in Elsa de’ Giorgi’s books ; images that dialogue, through various forms of interaction, with her literary oeuvre. More specifically, the portraits are included in the first editions of some of the author’s narrative and poetic texts, mostly located in the paratext. Beyond the graphic appearance of the volumes, the aspect on which we will focus does not concern so much, or only, the autobiographical references that are sometimes activated in the dialogue between words and images, as the possible effects on literary writing in terms of style and content. It is starting from these portraits that we will try to widen the perspective – including de’ Giorgi’s self-portraits – and to propose, through the images, a reading of the rhetorical constants, themes and motifs recurring in the macrotext of the actress-writer.
Se si studia la produzione di Elsa de’ Giorgi adottando la prospettiva critica e teorica della ‘divagrafia’ (Rizzarelli, 2017), non è possibile non fare riferimento a un orizzonte artistico che tenga insieme letteratura, cinema e teatro, che sono i poli lungo i quali scorre l’attività dell’attrice-scrittrice. Ma le contaminazioni tra il piano letterario e quello visuale si amplificano se si considerano anche altri linguaggi, come quello figurativo. Se si osservano, infatti, alcuni segmenti del corpus di de’ Giorgi, questa declinazione del dialogo tra la letteratura e le arti visive si presta ad offrire anche ulteriori livelli di analisi dell’immagine divistica dell’autrice. Punto di avvio del contributo sono alcune immagini riprodotte nei libri di Elsa de’ Giorgi ; immagini che dialogano quindi, attraverso varie forme di interazione, con la parola letteraria. Si tratta, più in particolare, di ritratti contenuti nelle prime edizioni di alcuni dei testi narrativi e poetici dell’autrice, collocati nella maggior parte dei casi nelle sezioni paratestuali delle opere. Al di là della veste grafica dei volumi, l’aspetto sul quale ci si soffermerà non riguarda tanto, o soltanto, i rimandi autobiografici che talvolta si attivano nel dialogo tra le parole e le immagini, quanto le possibili ricadute sulla scrittura letteraria sul piano stilistico e contenutistico. È a partire da questi ritratti che si cercherà di ampliare la prospettiva – includendo anche gli autoritratti realizzati da de’ Giorgi – e di proporre, attraverso le immagini, una lettura delle costanti retoriche, dei temi e dei motivi ricorrenti nel macrotesto dell’attrice-scrittrice.
