Giovanni Verga cent’anni dopo: il potere di chi giudica, lo straniamento, e la sua “terza via”

On the occasion of the centenary of Giovanni Verga's death (1922-2022), after proposing an reflection on the history of interpretation and current research perspectives, the contribution examines how the author's renunciation of "judging" is compensated by the representation (some short stories, I Malavoglia), of the power that exerts judgment on individuals, both that of the community and that of authority. The reticence of the author's judgment is likewise filled by estrangement, brought about not only by narrative delegation, but also by the multiplicity of points of view, which imply for the reader an even more necessary assumption of responsibility.

In occasione del centenario della morte di Giovanni Verga (1922-2022), dopo aver proposto una riflessione sulla storia dell’interpretazione e sulle attuali prospettive di indagine, il contributo esamina come la rinuncia dell’autore a “giudicare” sia compensata dalla rappresentazione (in alcune novelle, nei Malavoglia), del potere che esercita sugli individui il giudizio, sia quello della collettività, sia quello dell’autorità. La reticenza del giudizio dell’autore è parimenti colmata dallo straniamento, determinato non soltanto alla delega narrativa, ma anche dalla molteplicità dei punti di vista, che implicano per il lettore una ancor più necessaria assunzione di responsabilità.
