In a decision of 9 September 2021, the united civil sections of the Italian Court of Cassation have for the first time imposed restrictions on the display of the crucifix in public schools. The model of “secularism of the State” established by this judgement is unprecedented, both in the light of previous constitutional case law and in comparison with other national legal systems (France, Germany, Canada, USA).
