The cathedral of Syracuse was and still is the city’s most emblematic building and also a vivid representation of the continuity of its life and culture. The image of the imprisoned temple within the church is mostly the result of a major restoration, which took place between 1909 and 1926, and had the aim of unveiling the older Greek and Medieval structures, by eliminating the 18th and 19th century decorations. This “re-invention”, therefore, has a double meaning because it is brought by “uncovering” the structures that are found underneath the mantle of plaster that covered them, thus resulting in a “new creation” where different historical phases coexist like never before.
