The essay notes that in I Carbonari della montagna are the reflection of ideological position of the young Verga towards the social impact of the “Mille” enterprise, the revolts («brigandage»), of which he was a witness. A suggestive Sciascia’ s hypothesis on impressions left in Verga by peasant revolts in 1860, seems to be reflected in the textual interventions introduced by Verga in correction and editing phase of his first novel.
Il saggio rileva come nei Carbonari della montagna sia riscontrabile il riflesso della posizione ideologica del giovane Verga di fronte alle ripercussioni sociali dell’impresa dei Mille, le rivolte (il «brigantaggio») di cui egli stesso fu testimone. Una suggestiva ipotesi di Sciascia sulle impressioni lasciate nel catanese dalle rivolte contadine del 1860 sembra trovare un riscontro testuale negli interventi introdotti da Verga nella fase di correzione e pubblicazione del suo primo romanzo.
