The aim of this study is to highlight what image of the Jews can be drawn from reading the canons of the councils held in Gaul between the fourth and sixth centuries. Thus it is possible to assess how the transformations of the political framework of the territory were reflected on the condition of the Jews and on the perception that those responsible for the council production had of them. The diachronic investigation and comparison with civil legislation highlight the peculiarities of the framework offered by the conciliar production. Jews represent a troubling otherness from the earliest canons, but during the Merovingian kingdom the canons show increasing hostility. Anti-Judaism appears connected to the process of building and settling Frankish identity.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to highlight what image of the Jews can be drawn from reading the canons of the councils held in Gaul between the fourth and sixth centuries. Thus it is possible to assess how the transformations of the political framework of the territory were reflected on the condition of the Jews and on the perception that those responsible for the council production had of them. The diachronic investigation and comparison with civil legislation highlight the peculiarities of the framework offered by the conciliar production. Jews represent a troubling otherness from the earliest canons, but during the Merovingian kingdom the canons show increasing hostility. Anti-Judaism appears connected to the process of building and settling Frankish identity.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
