The chemical reactions induced by 70 keV As+, 100 keV B+ and 3 keV e- in PMDA-ODA polyimide (Kapton) are identified by XPS and the electronic structure of the irradiated samples is characterized by REELS technique. The quantitative trends for the various observed reactions are discussed in terms of the energy loss parameters for the various projectiles. A reaction simultaneously producing N and = C = O depletion is shown to depend upon the total deposited energy. Reactions due to the direct breaking of imidic rings, including elimination of C = O and formation of = C = N- links, together with those involving the breaking of the phenyl rings, producing extended cross-links, have been related directly to the collisional term of energy deposition. No peculiar reaction seems to depend on the electronic energy deposition term.
