Aphra Behn, playwright, poet and novelist, one of the most successful writers of the Restoration age, was relegated for centuries to the margins of the literary canon and considered an obscene and minor author. In the 20th century Behn was fully rehabilitated thanks to feminist literary criticism and appreciated not only as the first professional woman writer in English literature, but also as an original and versatile author «at the forefront of cultural innovation». Aphra Behn was a pioneer of the new literary genre of the novel, as the short story The Adventure of the Black Lady testifies (here translated into Italian for the first time), with her social criticism and her original protofeminist perspective.
