In Sicily, at the end of the seventies of the 16th century, a harsh dispute took place between the Viceroy Marco Antonio Colonna and the Duke of Terranova who, in the previous seven years, perfomed the office of president of the kingdom. A conflict characterised by the involvement of the Duke’s relatives, attacked with various obstilities, even some accuses of murder, and rooted in the ways and means the Duke used to rule before the arrival of Colonna. The battle between Palermo and Madrid involved the different aristocratic alignments, and it can be fully understood only looking at the territory, its actors and its uses. This key to the reading is useful to overcome the dominant interpretation of a conflict due to personal and courtisan reasons and to focus better on the scheme of the concrete relationships, of the economic choices, and of the territorial policies made by the Terranova.

Abstract
This key to the reading is useful to overcome the dominant interpretation of a conflict due to personal and courtisan reasons and to focus better on the scheme of the concrete relationships, of the economic choices, and of the territorial policies made by the Terranova.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
