Since 24 February 2022 international events have taken a terrible turn, underscoring profound divisions among the “Big Powers”, and emphasizing the weakness of the system of collective security hinging on the UN Security Council alone. This is particularly true when dialogue among its permanent members (the so-called “P-5”) becomes difficult. The war in Ukraine and renewed hostilities in the Gaza strip, have stressed the fragility of the rela- tionship among the P-5. This is not the first time the Council experiences stalemate and the exercise of multiple vetoes on draft resolutions. As usual the UN Organization has been accused of being useless and ineffective. Nonetheless, deadlock in the SC may have pushed the UN Member States to strengthen their efforts to make the GA an effective alternative forum to af- firm the opinion of the international community on certain issues and to pro- pose potential avenues for action by the Member States.
