The essay is divided into two parts. The first aims to reconstruct the theoretical background in which the question of the relationship between poetry and the death of the other is framed, in existential and psycho-evolutionary terms. In the second part, the theoretical framework is put to the test in the comparison with the two greatest poets of the Italian 20th century – Giuseppe Ungaretti and Eugenio Montale – and with their books dedicated to lost loved ones. For Ungaretti it is essentially the book dedicated to the death of his son Antonietto – Il Dolore (1947) –, for Montale it is Xenia (1971), the songbook dedicated to his dead wife. In both poets, the dimension of the voice appears decisive, even if in a different consideration of poetry and its return.
Il saggio si divide in due parti. Nella prima si punta a ricostruire lo sfondo teorico in cui si inquadra la questione del rapporto tra la poesia e la morte dell’altro, in termini esistenziali e psico-evolutivi. Nella seconda parte la cornice teorica viene come messa alla prova nel confronto coi due maggiori poeti del Novecento italiano – Giuseppe Ungaretti ed Eugenio Montale – e con i loro libri dedicati ai corpi amati perduti. Per Ungaretti si tratta essenzialmente del libro dedicato alla morte del figlio Antonietto – Il Dolore (1947) –, per Montale di Xenia (1971), il canzoniere dedicato alla moglie morta. In entrambi i poeti la dimensione della voce appare decisiva, pur in una diversa considerazione della poesia e del suo ritorno.
