A large amount of Aramaic graffiti covers the walls of the buildings of Hatra, the capital city of a kingdom of north-western Mesopotamia, which flourished between the 1st and the 3rd century AD. By means of the analysis of the results of a recent study on this written evidence, this paper shows how graffiti may provide the participants in the scholarly discussion with new data otherwise unattested by “official” epigraphic documents. Furthermore, Aramaic graffiti from Hatra may shed light on peculiar aspects of Hatra’s social life, e.g. financial transactions and economic activities involving currency and weight units.

Abstract
A large amount of Aramaic graffiti covers the walls of the buildings of Hatra, the capital city of a kingdom of north-western Mesopotamia, which flourished between the 1st and the 3rd century AD. By means of the analysis of the results of a recent study on this written evidence, this paper shows how graffiti may provide the participants in the scholarly discussion with new data otherwise unattested by “official” epigraphic documents. Furthermore, Aramaic graffiti from Hatra may shed light on peculiar aspects of Hatra’s social life, e.g. financial transactions and economic activities involving currency and weight units.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
