Having briefly recalled the question of the relationship between novella and frame, in relation to the genre system, the case of Scipione Bargagli's «Trattenimenti» is examined, a significant example, for the second half of the 16th century, of the reversal of the proportions between novella and frame. Corresponding to the quantitative and qualitative reduction of the novelle is the macroscopic enlargement of the "cornice", its becoming the centre and substance of the work, with the representation of the Sienese “veglie”, with respect to which the novella exercises an ancillary function. The inverted proportions can also be seen in the almost total withdrawal of the narrative delegation entrusted to the voice of the novelists and in the author's re-appropriation of a central function, with the aim, through the re-proposition of the custom of the Sienese “veglie”, of reaffirming an illustrious municipal cultural identity that was threatened by historical events.

Abstract
Having briefly recalled the question of the relationship between novella and frame, in relation to the genre system, the case of Scipione Bargagli's «Trattenimenti» is examined, a significant example, for the second half of the 16th century, of the reversal of the proportions between novella and frame. Corresponding to the quantitative and qualitative reduction of the novelle is the macroscopic enlargement of the "cornice", its becoming the centre and substance of the work, with the representation of the Sienese “veglie”, with respect to which the novella exercises an ancillary function. The inverted proportions can also be seen in the almost total withdrawal of the narrative delegation entrusted to the voice of the novelists and in the author's re-appropriation of a central function, with the aim, through the re-proposition of the custom of the Sienese “veglie”, of reaffirming an illustrious municipal cultural identity that was threatened by historical events.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
