Verga e D’Annunzio nel giudizio di Croce

To Verga and D'Annunzio Croce dedicated two fundamental Notes on Italian Literature of the 19th century, in the first two issues of «Critica». The evaluations of the two writers are interpreted here, noting their exemplary function in the relationship between criticism and Croce's aesthetic conceptions. What emerges is the relevance of the judgement, pervasive in the critical reception, on the continuity of the artistic «temperament» of each of the two authors, the antithesis between sincerity and falsehood, central in the essay Di un carattere della più recente letteratura italiana (1907), and the importance of the concluding essay on the «last D'Annunzio», of 1935: not so much an updated consideration on D'Annunzio's production, but a radical re-dimensioning of the judgement on the writer, to whom Croce definitively denied «humanity» and «poetry».

Le valutazioni dei due scrittori sono qui interpretate rilevandone la funzione esemplare nel rapporto tra critica e concezioni estetiche crociane. Emergono la rilevanza del giudizio, pervasivo nella ricezione critica, sulla continuità del «temperamento» artistico di ognuno dei due autori, l’antitesi tra sincerità e falsità, centrale nel saggio Di un carattere della più recente letteratura italiana (1907), l’importanza del conclusivo saggio sull’«ultimo D’Annunzio», del 1935: non tanto una considerazione aggiornata sulla produzione dannunziana, ma un radicale ridimensionamento del giudizio sullo scrittore, a cui Croce nega definitivamente «umanità» e «poesia».
