Pistachio (Pistacia vera) is an important nut crop that is widely distributed in the Mediterranean area. Sicily represents the center of the national pistachio production in Italy, with the area of Bronte being a traditionally successful area of production due to the peculiar characteristics of the territory and the quality of the kernels. Recently, new plantings are expanding throughout Sicily with growers interested in innovative farming systems consisting of mechanization, rational planting design and implementation of modern agronomic practices. Modernization has led to an increase in the research of the phytopathological situation of pistachio in Italy, as historically this crop’s diseases were poorly investigated and only outdated data were available. Among the foliar diseases, Septoria leaf spot caused by Septoria pistaciarum is considered the most transmissive and common disease. Botryosphaeriaceae spp. are responsible for the Botryosphaeria panicle and shoot blight, and has been found in the new orchards attacking leaves, fruit panicles, and shoots. Leptosillia pistaciae in Bronte area is the main canker pathogen, whereas Cytospora pistaciae and Eutypa lata are considered sporadic canker pathogens. Major and minor diseases of pistachio in Italy, and the updates of the research, are discussed and summarized in this compendium.
