Through an in-depth analysis of evidence (mainly literary, but also numismatic and iconographic) concerning the habits of the Nile hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius, L. 1758) and the capture of specimens for spectacles, the essay aims to verify whether it is possible to establish a cause-and-effect link between venationes and the risk of extinction (§ 1), to identify any actual confirmation of the progressive disappearance of the animal in the Egyptian area as early as Late Antiquity (§ 2) and to understand whether or not the Romans can really be considered the only ones “responsible” for this serious damage to the ancient ecosystem (§ 3).

Abstract
Through an in-depth analysis of evidence (mainly literary, but also numismatic and iconographic) concerning the habits of the Nile hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius, L. 1758) and the capture of specimens for spectacles, the essay aims to verify whether it is possible to establish a cause-and-effect link between venationes and the risk of extinction (§ 1), to identify any actual confirmation of the progressive disappearance of the animal in the Egyptian area as early as Late Antiquity (§ 2) and to understand whether or not the Romans can really be considered the only ones “responsible” for this serious damage to the ancient ecosystem (§ 3).I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
