Mezzagnone’s building, also known as ‘Bagno di mare’, is a small baths construction that stands nearby the urban centre of Santa Croce Camerina, in the province of Ragusa. In the last two centuries this archeological document and the close-by twin building of ‘Vigna di mare’, now lost, have been the subject matter of a rich historiographic debate, dealing with both their chronology and their original purpose. The controversy about the identity of both the buildings goes beyond the regional bounderies, forming BATHS ARCHITECTURE IN MEDIAEVAL SICILY: NEW HYPOTHESIS ON THE IDENTITY OF MEZZAGNONE’S BUILDING Ilenia Licitra part of the wider question regarding the origins of Visigothic architecture and the transmission of the Byzantine stylistic-formal vocabulary from the EasternMediterranean regions to the Iberian peninsula. As a matter of fact, these local architecture samples witness how widespread such models and plans were in the Mediterranean area; moreover they show the diffusion of techinical knowledges between the East and the West in the Early Middle Ages, throughout the Omayadde stylistic and technical vocabulary.
