From an interdisciplinary perspective, using quantitative and theoretical methods, it needs to define the controversial and elusive concept of sustainability, most frequently discussed in institutional and academic debate in recent years. Sustainability is a contested concept, changing over time and taking on new meanings related to the different phases of the international scientific and not scientific literature. In order to advance the knowledge and evaluate inequalities in sustainability, the measurement issues are crucial for assessing social sustainability by providing data and indexes related to social participation, cultural participation, well-being, and social cohesion at different territorial levels. Statistical methods can provide data and indicators aiming to both a comprehensive account measurement of the factors underlying territorial divides and gaps (in terms of infrastructure, human capital, entrepreneurship, quality of public services, and efficiency of local public administrations), and an efficient design of policies to favour the territorial sustainability, the development of stagnant and peripheral areas, and the reduction of the centre-periphery divides within the cities. The special issue devotes specific attention to analysis, policies, and contributions supporting sustainable development across and within different territorial areas focusing on methodological issues related to the measurement of social inclusion and cohesion and wellbeing of the population.

Abstract

Sustainability in all its different facets with the implications for policy makers is the common thread of all the contributions in this volume. Sustainability is a key concept for the development of the countries. A society that offers equal opportunities of upward social mobility and well-being, reduces marginalization and creates the conditions for better institutions, trust, and social capital that in turn foster economic growth.
