Founded in 663 BC, on a strategically favourable location, Akrai is the first Syracuse sub-colony. Aphrodite was probably the favorite deity: a temple was consecrated to his cult. To the cults connected to the protector deities of the territory developed, from the IV sec. a.c. the heroic cults. They were part of the societies of the past, finding roots in the heroic past as the one that recounts the actions of the oecists, who were considered fundamental personalities for the creation of the identity of the community, deeply linked to the earth. In ancient Akrai, an obvious example of such practices is the bas-relief present in the Via Sacra of Intagliatella. The deification of honourable citizens, as well as the sacrifices and rituals dedicated to them, served to preserve their deeds and to give value to the society they belong to. These cults are all expressions of a collective memory and identity shared by the members of the community. In modern society, the domination of time is still an essential theme and is reflected in the patronal festivities, which are calendared following the agricultural cycle. They derive from the ancestral memory of peasant civilization and profoundly mark the identity of the devotees, through the transmission of very ancient rituals, often adapted to the Catholic liturgy, which are an expression of the needs of the peasant world itself.
Fondata nel 663 a.C., su un luogo strategicamente favorevole, Akrai è la prima sub-colonia siracusana. Afrodite ne era, probabilmente, la divinità prediletta: al suo culto venne consacrato un tempio. Ai culti connessi alle divinità protettrici del territorio si svilupparono, dal IV sec. a.C. i culti eroici. Essi erano parte delle società del passato, trovando radici nel passato eroico come quello che racconta le azioni degli ecisti, che venivano considerati personalità fondamentali per la creazione dell’identità della comunità, profondamente legata alla terra. Nell’antica Akrai esempio evidente di tali pratiche è il bassorilievo presente nella Via Sacra dell’Intagliatella. La divinizzazione dei cittadini onorevoli, così come i sacrifici e i rituali a loro dedicati serviva a preservarne le gesta e a dare valore alla società di appartenenza. Tali culti sono tutti espressione di una memoria e un’identità collettive, condivise dai membri della comunità. Nella società moderna, il dominio del tempo è ancora un tema essenziale e si rispecchia nelle feste patronali, calendarizzate seguendo il ciclo agrario.
