The contribution aims to analyse the visual aspects of the ecphrastic episode of the Chambre de Beautés, contained within Benoît de Sainte-Maure’s Roman de Troie. The approach derived from the Visual Studies exalts complex dynamics and interactions between author, artistic objects and receivers, both intra- and extra-diegetic. These are intertwined with the merveille, to which the episode is indebted. From this point of view, its main works of art, the automata, become a key element to shed a light on the cultural and ideological background which influenced the artistic representation.
Il contributo mira ad analizzare gli aspetti visuali dell’episodio ecfrastico della Chambre de Beautés, contenuto all’interno del Roman de Troie di Benoît de Sainte-Maure. L’approccio derivato dai Visual Studies esalta dinamiche e interazioni complesse tra autore, oggetti artistici e fruitori, intra- ed extra-diegetici, le quali risultano essere intrecciate con la merveille cui si ascrive la rappresenta-zione. In tale ottica, le sue attrazioni principali, gli automi, diventano elemento cardine per la messa in luce del fondo culturale ed ideologico che ha influenzato la rappresentazione artistica.
