The essay explores the way the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel observed the Sicilian land- scape during his travel to Italy in 1804. Through his drawings, Schinkel does not just create travel documentation, but analyses the relationship between architecture and landscape, consid- ering classical ruin and rural architecture as equally contributing elements to the construc- tion of the Sicilian landscape: a radically critical thought compared to the travelers who preced- ed him. In particular, the contribution reflect on the attention to detail and large-scale observed simultaneously, evident both in the sketches and “analytical” representations, where each ele- ment contributes to the construction of a larger system. Based on this specific point of view and in continuity with the work done by Schinkel on the country house in Syracuse, a method of representation is proposed that investigates the relationship between the built environment and the Etnean Sicilian landscape: the Trittico di Trecastagni.
