Thanks to the important studies of the last two centuries, Eurialo castle has now been recognized as one of the most important fortress of the greek period. Despite the abundant publications on this topic, there are not many information about the archaeological excavations that led both to the current state and to the actual interpretation of the ruins. Through the presentation of two unpublished plans of the 19th century and the investigation of Paolo Orsi excavation works by his travel diaries, the essay proposes new elements for a history of the archaeological excavations and underlines the importance of Orsi’s contribution for the knowledge of the monument.

Abstract

Thanks to the important studies of the last two centuries, Eurialo castle has now been recognized as one of the most important fortress of the greek period. Despite the abundant publications on this topic, there are not many information about the archaeological excavations that led both to the current state and to the actual interpretation of the ruins. Through the presentation of two unpublished plans of the 19th century and the investigation of Paolo Orsi excavation works by his travel diaries, the essay proposes new elements for a history of the archaeological excavations and underlines the importance of Orsi’s contribution for the knowledge of the monument.
