This essay reflects on literary translation, taking into account John Williams’s novel Stoner (1965) and its translation into Italian by Stefano Tummolini (2012). Using george Steiner’s paradigm, which states that all understanding is a form of translation, we see how Williams’s writing is a translation in its own right, that is, an interpretation of university life.

Abstract

This essay reflects on literary translation, taking into account John Williams’s novel Stoner (1965) and its translation into Italian by Stefano Tummolini (2012). Using george Steiner’s paradigm, which states that all understanding is a form of translation, we see how Williams’s writing is a translation in its own right, that is, an interpretation of university life.
