This paper aims to explore Byzantine-Russian relations during the reign of Emperor John Tzimiskes (969-976), with reference to the occupation and administration of Bulgaria. I will examine some key episodes, and especially investigate the use of religious themes and motifs in Byzantine propaganda. These themes, reflected in historiographical works, were intended to reaffirm the sacred nature of the conflict the Byzantines were waging against the powerful Rus’.
