In 2023, the MiSAK (Italian Historical and Archaeological Mission in Kurdistan) launched a project aimed at the study, preservation, and enhancement of the site of Gawr Tepe, located in the Khani Masi plain, within the Autonomous Region of Iraqi Kurdistan (KRI, Iraq). The site of Gawr Tepe is a historical testimony of exceptional significance, and its study will undoubtedly provide valuable new insights for a broader understanding of the history and archaeological landscape of the region during the transition from Sasanian rule to the Islamic conquest. MiSAK’s preliminary archaeological studies confirm a significant continuity of occupation and suggest that the imposing palace of Gawr Tepe, and probably the connected settlement, were continuously inhabited from at least the Sasanian period until the 13th century. Moreover, the significant archaeological stratigraphy, the impressive architectural remains, and the quantity and quality of ceramic materials and stucco decorations, uncovered even through surface material collection, unequivocally attest to Gawr Tepe’s role as a centre of regional importance.
