The Italian Historical Archaeological Mission in Kurdistan (MiSAK), initiated in 2021 by ISMEO and the International Kurdish Cultural Institute of Rome, focuses on investigating, preserving, and promoting the historical and archaeological heritage of Kurdish populations. Operating from 2021 to 2024 within the geopolitical context of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), particularly in the Garmian area, MiSAK integrates historical-archaeological studies, restoration, training and community engagement, significantly advancing the understanding preservation and enhancement of archaeological sites. A cornerstone of its activities is the “Sarqala Project,” established in December 2021. The archaeological site of Sarqala, along with the adjacent modern village, gained prominence following the discovery of a Parthian-period tomb in 2013. Additionally, MiSAK’s investigations have unveiled several other archaeological areas, indicating extensive human occupation possibly dating from the 6th millennium BCE to the Islamic period. Stratigraphic excavations that began in 2022 targeted the Parthian-period necropolis, the “Jewish cemetery” area, and the Qalla Kon tell, providing critical data on the site’s archaeological stratigraphy and diachronic development. Key activities of MiSAK also include topographic surveys, systematic collection of surface materials, geophysical surveys, restoration interventions, and awareness-raising initiatives aimed at local communities, along with training activities for local counterparts.

Abstract
Key activities of MiSAK also include topographic surveys, systematic collection of surface materials, geophysical surveys, restoration interventions, and awareness-raising initiatives aimed at local communities, along with training activities for local counterparts.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
