Trials aiming at evaluating the efficacy of sulphur, sublimated by means ofelectric devices, in the control of the main diseases and arthropod pests ofprotected tomato crops were conducted in Sicily, both in biological and integratedconditions. The advantages compared to traditional distribution methods arethe better efficacy on noxious organisms, reduced labour-cost, smaller quantityof sulphur employed andminor pesticides residues on fruits. The data obtained showed that the new technique used to apply sulphur is veryeffective in controlling powdery mildew while a bit less effective in containinginfections by other fungal pathogens, on some of which it has a delaying effect.Arthropod pests were controlled satisfactorily, mainly at low population densities. The best result swere obtained on the Tomato russetmite, although a goodefficacy was also recorded on leafminers andwhiteflies, whose control caused a reduction in the viral infections.
