Dianthus rupicola Biv. is a chasmophilous chamaephyte circumscribed to the Central Mediterranean area. From the literature data as well as herbarium and field investigations, this species is represented by five subspecies with an allopatric distribution, as. subsp. rupicola from Sicily and S Italy, subsp. aeolicus (Lojac.) stat. nov. from Aeolian islands and NE Sicily, subsp. lopadusanus subsp. nov. from Lampedusa island, subsp. hermaeensis (Cosson) O. Bolòs & Vigo from NE Tunisia and subsp. bocchorianus Llorens & Gradaille from Majorca island.
