Between 1860 and 1868, Fernand de Dartein conducted several site inspections in Brescia, surveying the Rotunda and the crypt of San Filastrio, likely built in the Carolingian period and annexed to the early Christian cathedral, later transformed during the Romanesque reconstruction. However, establishing exact chronologies is challenging, and the positions and arguments of critical debate differ, amidst historiographical doubts and documentary uncertainties. Dartein's surveys provide some new data, which can be combined with existing information to clarify interpretations and contribute to new studies. The graphic material collected by the French architect regarding the plan of the crypt, its particularities, and the twenty capitals, including reused ones (notes, drawings, reliefs, preparatory plates, engravings), and the correspondence with the Brescian scholar Federico Odorici, make his contribution, some previously unpublished, useful for reinterpreting the crypt.

Abstract
Between 1860 and 1868, Fernand de Dartein conducted several site inspections in Brescia, surveying the Rotunda and the crypt of San Filastrio, likely built in the Carolingian period and annexed to the early Christian cathedral, later transformed during the Romanesque reconstruction. However, establishing exact chronologies is challenging, and the positions and arguments of critical debate differ, amidst historiographical doubts and documentary uncertainties. Dartein's surveys provide some new data, which can be combined with existing information to clarify interpretations and contribute to new studies. The graphic material collected by the French architect regarding the plan of the crypt, its particularities, and the twenty capitals, including reused ones (notes, drawings, reliefs, preparatory plates, engravings), and the correspondence with the Brescian scholar Federico Odorici, make his contribution, some previously unpublished, useful for reinterpreting the crypt.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
