The present research analyzes the main port systems of the Roman Tyrrhenian coast during the Imperial period, adopting a comparative and critical approach. The investigation is based on the integration of heterogeneous sources, epigraphic, iconographic, and literary, with particular attention to Vitruvius’ De Architectura regarding technical and construction criteria. These pieces of evidence are consistently compared with the available archaeological data, consisting of the remains of port infrastructures, in order to reconstruct the planning and functional strategies adopted. For reasons of conciseness, the study focuses on several emblematic cases: Pozzuoli, a crucial hub for the supply of Rome; Misenum, a port with a military vocation; Ostia, analyzed in its evolution from the Republican river port to the interventions of Claudius; Antium, Astura, and Tarracina; and the large Trajanic port of Centumcellae. The comparative approach highlights both continuities and innovations in the design strategies of Tyrrhenian ports, providing new insights into the understanding of maritime infrastructures in the Imperial period. The study therefore examines ancient ports through these emblematic case studies along the Tyrrhenian coast.

Abstract
The study therefore examines ancient ports through these emblematic case studies along the Tyrrhenian coast.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
