The essay presents the outcomes of the research project “Towards a European Model of Civil Liability?” and argues that a European system of civil liability is emerging from EU sectoral legislation and the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union. The analysis develops along three levels: the autonomous interpretation of EU liability regimes beyond domestic legal categories; the identification of common principles governing damages, causation, and standards of liability; and the contribution of these principles to the evolution of national civil liability systems. The essay highlights the central role of the comparative method in shaping a coherent European model of civil liability capable of addressing the challenges of the digital and green transitions.
