Representations of adultery and bigamy in the sensation novel

For many respects the problematic and unsettling mirror of a complex reality, the sensation novel is par excellence a fluid and liminal genre, able to share stylistic features, techniques of construction of diegesis and characters, and much more, with high literature. At the same time, it is able to specifically relate itself both to forms of popular and mass literature, and to the most upsetting and ‘sensational’ aspects of coeval chronicle. Precisely from this magmatic confluence of elements ensuing from an axiology which exalts the typically Victorian vision of a subjected and self-sacrificing womanhood, news items apparently contradicting that vision, and the debate on the role of monogamic marriage as the expression of civilized society, proceeds the representation, in the sensation novel, of a plurality of deviant (anti)heroines. Rather often they are adulterous and/or bigamous women, dangerously charming creatures portrayed as domestic demons, ready to violate both the behavioural codes and standards of female propriety and to endanger social order. Of these disturbing ‘daughters’ at the same time of social reality and of the creative imagination of sensation authors – and especially authoresses – this essay examines emblematic examples and characteristics, pointing out the funambolic choices and compromises of writers always on the borderline between the wish for transgression and the necessary, though sometimes only formal, adherence to the ethical (and aesthetical) codes of their time.

Specchio per molti versi problematico e perturbante di una realtà complessa, il sensation novel recupera e condivide con la high literature tecniche ed elementi di varia natura, e al contempo si riallaccia più specificamente sia a forme di letteratura popolare e di massa, sia agli aspetti più sconvolgenti e ‘sensazionali’ della cronaca contemporanea. L’indagine qui condotta, punta a dimostrare come proprio da tale magmatica confluenza di elementi derivati da un’assiologia che esalta la visione tipicamente vittoriana della womanhood come sottomessa e autosacrificale, fatti di cronaca che quella visione paiono contraddire, e il dibattito (anche legislativo) sul ruolo del matrimonio monogamico come espressione della società ‘civile’, scaturisce la rappresentazione nel sensation novel di una molteplicità di (anti)eroine devianti. Si tratta non di rado di adultere e/o bigame, creature perigliosamente affascinanti raffigurate come demoni domestici, pronte egualmente a violare i codici comportamentali e gli standard del decoro femminile e a minacciare l’ordine sociale. Di queste inquietanti ‘figlie’ a un tempo della realtà sociale e dell’immaginazione degli autori – e soprattutto delle autrici – sensazionalisti, si analizzano qui, con ricchezza di riferimenti critici e testuali, alcuni esempi e tratti emblematici, evidenziando le scelte funamboliche e i compromessi di scrittori perennemente in bilico tra volontà di trasgressione e necessaria, sia pure a volte solo formale, adesione ai codici etici (ed estetici) dell’epoca.
